Libretto by Calisto Bassi, cf. Dizionario biografico degli Italiani, volume 7 (1970).
A variation on Bassi's earlier libretto Il postiglione di Longjumeau, which was first performed in Milan in 1838 with music by Pietro Antonio Coppola. Il postiglione di Longjumeau was itself based on Adolphe de Leuven and Léon Lévy Brunswick's Le postillon de Lonjumeau.
