Second Growth Redwood Cutting Experiment Project #688, Big River, Mendocino County, California. Fire is said not to injure redwood second growth but here is an example of a very prevalent type of damage caused by fire in the decaying old stump and reflecting great heat to the second growth tree nearby. The tree is trying to heal the wound very rapidly but the wood inside is rotten. The butt log is ruined and the rot may be expected to extend further. E. Fritz, May 1923.
