Oral interview with Vernon Miller, born March 26, 1927, in the Old Indian Camp near Lone Pine, California. Mr. Miller talks about the history and culture of the Owens Valley Paiute, specific to Fort Independence, including the Paiute's forced march to Fort Tejon in 1863 and the Owens Valley Indian Wars of 1861-1863. Interview also covers the establishment of Fort Independence military outpost and stories about Paiute songs and legends related to Paiute culture and daily life in Independence, Big Pine, and Lone Pine.
