Robert Gracey’s family came to the Owens Valley circa 1900, and lived at the Kearsarge railroad station. Gracey was born there, left the Owens Valley for a few years of his early childhood, and then the family returned and set up residence in Independence, where Gracey remained. He was an Independence resident when Manzanar War Relocation Center existed. As an Inyo County supervisor decades later, he supported the establishment of Manzanar National Historic Site.
