Description

California Audiovisual Preservation Project (CAVPP)
Out in San Diego (OISD) was an LGBT radio program that aired on KPBS in the mid-1980s. Producers included Rick Moore and Jeri Dilno, both active participants in the San Diego LGBT movement and local political organizations. This reel includes a broadcast segment from July 12, 1983. The primary topic is the Blood Sisters program. Blood Sisters was founded by the San Diego Democratic Club (SDDC). SDDC member Barbara Bick organized the first drive held July 15, thought to be the first such blood drive anywhere. The donations of blood created credits for blood to be given to people with AIDS and ARC. Nearly 200 lesbians gave blood in response to news that gay men were no longer allowed to donate blood because of the possibility of AIDS virus contamination.
