Description

California Audiovisual Preservation Project (CAVPP)
Interview of Philip S. Williams by Jane Morgan as part of research for her book, "Electronics in the West," published in 1967. Williams and his partner Oliver Johnson are featured in Chapter VI, which includes a profile of their Palo Alto garage start-up, Johnson-Williams Incorporated, founded in 1927 or 1928 at 430 Tennyson Avenue. Johnson-Williams is recognized as one of the oldest electronics companies in Palo Alto, and their portable instrument, the "J-W Sniffer," made a significant impact on safety in the gas industry, allowing Standard Oil to sense the presence of combustible gases. Morgan's recordings were part of the Perham Collection of Early Electronics, donated to History San Jose in 2003 by the Foothill Electronics Museum of Los Altos Hills.
