Description

California Audiovisual Preservation Project (CAVPP)
Born and raised in Redlands, California, Joan Tewkesbury attended the University of Southern California before starting her career as a dancer. In 1971, she joined Robert Altman’s filmmaking cohort as a script supervisor for McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971). She then wrote screenplays for two of Altman’s 70’s classics: Thieves Like Us (1974) and Nashville (1975), the latter being based on her first-hand observations of the city. Since then she has written, directed, and produced a number of projects for stage, film, and television.
