California Preservation Service (CAPS)
Cars parked along Topanga Highway for Christian Science church services. Christian Science was the first denomination to build a church in Topanga. In the early 1920s Christian Science practitioner Mable Lewis rented a cottage at Kneen's Kamp and began holding Sunday services in her home for interested friends and neighbors. As attendance grew, TW Kneen, who owned the camp, built a small cement block church called the Christian Science Society on Topanga Highway south of the family home that attracted an enthusiastic congregation and Sunday School from Santa Monica and Los Angeles as well as the local community. Picture was taken circa 1930. This image was provided by Lynn Dickhoff for inclusion in the Topanga Digital History collection.
