Description
California Audiovisual Preservation Project (CAVPP)
These minutes include a discussion of the US Supreme Court's Decision in Abington School District v. Schempp (1962) and its impact on curriculum in California. Schempp dealt with a Pennsylvania School District requiring daily biblical study and recitation in public schools. The Supreme Court held this practice to violate the Free Exercise and Establishment Clauses of the 1st Amendment. The Board, in written transcripts, discusses how this case will impact teaching the Bible in California and what the decision did prevent and did not prevent with respect to religious instruction and what place religion had in public schools. They also had a fairly detailed legal analysis of the opinion.
