This hand-colored stereograph card features two nearly identical, side-by-side rectangular photographs with arched tops, mounted on a light-brown, pebble-textured cardboard backing. The image depicts a wide, desolate street scene showing significant ground displacement. In the foreground, a deep, jagged fissure in the paved road snakes from the lower center toward the right background, with the asphalt buckled and separated. Several men in dark suits and hats stand in the middle distance, appearing small against the scale of the damage. The background features the ruins of multi-story buildings, reduced to skeletal walls and piles of rubble, while a few leaning utility poles with cross-arms and thin trees remain standing against a pale, hazy sky. Small, white printed text at the bottom right of the photographs reads: "No. 1041. The Earthquake Ruptured Pavement and Fire Wrecked Mansions on Van Ness Ave., San Francisco."
