Description
This hand-colored stereograph card features two nearly identical, side-by-side rectangular photographs with arched tops, mounted on a light-brown, pebble-textured cardboard backing. The image depicts a bustling refugee camp filled with small, light-colored canvas tents and temporary shelters. In the foreground, numerous people, including men in dark suits and hats and women in long dresses, are active within the camp; some stand near piles of supplies and bundles, while others appear to be moving through the narrow paths between shelters. In the center foreground, several large, wicker-style baskets or bundles are piled together. The background is crowded with a dense field of similar tents stretching toward the horizon under a pale, hazy sky. Small, light-colored text printed at the bottom right of the photographs reads: "No. 1034. The Refugee Camps and Shelters at Ft. Mason after the Earthquake and Fire Disaster, San Francisco." Below the mounted stereograph, a gray and black color calibration scale is visible within the frame.
