Description
This hand-colored stereograph card features two nearly identical, side-by-side rectangular photographs with rounded corners, mounted on a light-brown, pebble-textured cardboard backing. The image shows a group of about six men in dark hats, coats, and vests gathered around large, dark metal safes amidst a dense field of rubble. One man on the right is seated on a pile of bricks, while others stand or lean over the safes, which appear partially buried in light-colored debris. In the background, the scorched, skeletal remains of brick buildings with hollowed windows are visible under a pale sky. Small, light-colored text printed at the bottom right of the photographs reads: "No. 1002. Opening the Safes of a Market Street Jewelry Store, San Francisco, after the Catastrophe.". Below the mounted stereograph, a gray and black color calibration scale is visible within the frame.
