Description

This sepia-toned stereograph features two nearly identical photographs mounted side-by-side on a yellow card, showing an elevated, wide-angle view of a valley settlement. In the immediate foreground, dark, jagged rocks and sparse desert vegetation occupy the slope from which the photo was taken. Below, a flat valley floor contains a small town with several light-colored buildings and structures spread out along a grid-like layout. Long, straight fences or roads extend across the plain toward the background. Beyond the settlement, a series of low, rounded hills and distant mountain ranges sit under a pale, hazy sky. The card includes vertical printed text in the margins: "UTAH SERIES." on the left and "Explorations West of the 100th Meridian. Expedition of 1872, Lieut. Geo. M. Wheeler, Com'dg." on the right. Small text at the bottom left attributes the work to "W. Bell, Phot." and the bottom center is labeled "No. 13—Gunnison." A grayscale calibration strip is visible along the top edge of the digital image, separate from the physical card.
