Description

This sepia-toned stereograph features two nearly identical photographs mounted side-by-side on a yellow card, showing a vast canyon from an elevated vantage point. In the immediate foreground, dark, silhouetted crags and jagged rock edges frame the view from below. The midground opens into a wide canyon with steep, textured walls characterized by vertical erosion channels and sharp ridges. A large, flat-topped mesa stands prominently in the center of the canyon, partially shadowed on its right side. The background reveals further layers of distant, hazy canyon walls under a pale, clear sky. The card contains vertical printed text in the margins: "COLORADO RIVER SERIES." on the left and "Explorations West of the 100th Meridian. Expedition of 1872, Lieut. Geo. M. Wheeler, Com'dg." on the right. Small text at the bottom left attributes the work to "W. Bell, Phot." while the bottom center contains the caption, "No. 74—Grand Cañon; Sheavwitz Crossing." A grayscale calibration strip is visible along the top edge of the digital image, separate from the physical card.
