Description

This sepia-toned stereograph features two nearly identical photographs mounted side-by-side on a yellow card, depicting a canyon landscape with distinctive geological formations. In the foreground, numerous large, rounded desert shrubs and sagebrush-like plants cover the sandy, uneven ground. The midground is dominated by a long, steep hillside characterized by vertical erosion flutes and craggy rock faces. The top of this ridge is relatively flat, with sparse vegetation along the crest. In the background, more distant and shadowed mountain peaks are visible under a pale, clear sky. The card contains vertical printed text in the margins: "UTAH SERIES." on the left and "Explorations West of the 100th Meridian. Expedition of 1872, Lieut. Geo. M. Wheeler, Com'dg." on the right. Small text at the bottom left attributes the work to "W. Bell, Phot." and the bottom center is labeled "No. 9—Salt Creek Cañon, near Mt. Nebo." A grayscale calibration strip is visible along the top edge of the digital image, separate from the physical card.
