Description

This sepia-toned stereograph features two nearly identical photographs mounted side-by-side on a yellow card, highlighting a unique geological formation. The central focus is a large, dark, irregularly shaped "perched" boulder balanced precariously atop a much narrower, light-colored stone pedestal. The ground surrounding the base of the pedestal is sandy and scattered with small rocks and sparse desert vegetation. In the background, a flat, light-colored plain extends toward a distant, low horizon line under a pale sky. The card contains vertical printed text in the margins: "GEOLOGICAL SERIES." on the left and "Explorations West of the 100th Meridian. Expedition of 1872, Lieut. Geo. M. Wheeler, Com'dg." on the right. Small text at the bottom left attributes the work to "W. Bell, Phot." while the bottom center contains the caption, "No. 110—Perched Rock, Rocker Creek, Arizona." A grayscale calibration strip is visible along the top edge of the digital capture, separate from the physical card.
