Description

This sepia-toned stereograph features two nearly identical photographs mounted side-by-side on a yellow card, depicting a textured rock wall and a rocky stream bed. The central focus is a "Tufa Bank," a high cliff face with a rough, porous, and heavily pitted surface created by mineral deposits. Large, dark, cavernous openings and deep shadows are visible within the rock wall. In the foreground, a shallow stream or "wash" flows over a bed of smooth, light-colored stones and boulders. Two small human figures stand near the base of the cliff on the right side of the stream, providing a sense of scale against the towering formation. The card contains vertical printed text in the margins: "GEOLOGICAL SERIES." on the left and "Explorations West of the 100th Meridian. Expedition of 1872, Lieut. Geo. M. Wheeler, Com'dg." on the right. Small text at the bottom left attributes the work to "W. Bell, Phot." while the bottom center contains the caption, "No. 116—Tufa Bank, Kanab Wash." A grayscale calibration strip is visible along the top edge of the digital image, separate from the physical card.
