Description
A sepia-toned historical photograph, dated April 21, 1884, depicts a wide, unpaved dirt road in Santa Barbara, California. On the right side of the road stands a long, single-story adobe building with a covered wooden veranda supported by a series of dark vertical posts. The building has a light-colored exterior and a dark, sloped roof. A lone figure in a dark hat and suit stands on the far right end of the veranda. To the left of the road, in the distance, is a taller, multi-story masonry building featuring a prominent clock tower on its corner. The horizon is framed by low, rolling hills under a pale, clear sky. Sparse vegetation, including a tall, slender tree behind the adobe and low-lying shrubs along the road's edge, dots the landscape. The dirt road shows faint wagon wheel tracks leading from the foreground toward the buildings in the distance.
