Note
Cabinet card photograph by W. & D. Downey, London.
Identified in pencil on back of card mount, prior to receipt by library: "Mrs. Hearst." Provenance unknown, but presumably received with other Hearst photographs. It is likely the identification was provided by someone, perhaps a Hearst staff person, who saw a resemblance and made an incorrect assumption. This portrait was taken in the 1870s, probably late in the decade, based on the dress style and the style of cabinet card mount. It was also taken in London. Phoebe Apperson Hearst was married in Missouri in 1862. The subject of this portrait is probably ten to fifteen years younger than Phoebe Apperson Hearst.
