A sepia-toned, nineteenth-century photograph shows a large wooden mill building at the base of a high, brush-covered mountain ridge. The central structure is a dark, gabled building with vertical siding; a small white sign on its side reads "BENTON MILLS." in dark, block lettering. Attached to the front of this building is a lower, light-colored shed or porch with a flat roof. To the right of the mill, several long, dark wooden logs or beams are laid out in parallel rows across the light-colored, dusty ground. A small, dark cart or wagon is visible further to the right. The steep mountain in the background is covered in a dense pattern of dark, low-lying shrubs and small trees, rising to meet a pale, hazy sky. The photograph is mounted on a light-colored cardboard backing with rounded upper corners. Positioned vertically along the left edge of the archival mount are a Kodak Gray Scale and a color calibration target containing a series of neutral gray and primary-colored rectangular tiles.
