Description

Janet Cobb was born in Paxton, Nebraska and moved to the San Francisco Bay Area near El Sobrante when she was three years old. She grew up in the East Bay, where she went to school during integration. She enjoyed horseback riding and won several trail riding competitions. She attended San Mateo Community College when she was thirty-six years old and finished her bachelor's degree at San Francisco State University before beginning a career in communications. She was hired by the East Bay Regional Park District in 1986. During her time with the park district, she raised $9 million to acquire Pleasanton Ridge Regional Park and successfully lead the campaign for Measure AA in 1988, a bond measure that provided the park district with $225 million to purchase more parkland, resulting in the acquisition of over 30,000 acres in Alameda and Contra Costa counties. She left the park district to work for the California Oaks Foundation and is now the Executive Officer of the California Wildlife Federation. In this interview, Cobb discusses: her early life; family background; becoming a wife and mother; involvement with horses and rodeo culture; continuing and completing her college education; career in communications; work with the East Bay Regional Park District on both Pleasanton Ridge and Measure AA; California Oaks Foundation; California Wildlife Federation; and her hopes for the future.
