Description
Vegetation map series, chiefly covers areas in Mendocino and Sonoma counties in northern California. Waxman overlaid the color-coded VTM classification scheme that had been used on the Wieslander Vegetation Type Map (VTM) until the early 1940s onto sheet maps produced between 1949 and 1979 depicting vegetation mapping data that had been compiled by the State Cooperative Soil-Vegetation Survey.

Title varies.
Sheet numbering: The first part of the sheet number identifies the location of the sheet by row and column within the coverage area of this 2024 colorized map series. The row and column numbering begins in the northwest of the coverage area with row 1, column 1. The second part of the sheet number identifies the sheet number used in the original map series. For example, Sheet 4.3_43_D-3_color is the sheet in row 4, column 3 of the 2024 map series, with the vegetation source map data of sheet 43D-3. The sheet number of the vegetation source map data series can be found in the upper right margin.
VTM classification in left margin: "Types: Dense Woodland -- Grassy Woodland -- Woodland, Sage -- Grassland -- Mixed Brush -- Chamise -- Dense Chaparral -- Redwood -- Redwood, Fir -- Pine, Fir -- Rare Trees -- Pine -- Douglas Fir -- Cultivated -- Barren."
Waxman also added a location map which serves as map series coverage diagram.
Funding for the production of the sheets of this map series was provided by the Department of Landscape Architecture & Environmental Planning of the University of California, Berkeley.
The source maps were blue line print maps.
Description of the source map data: Beginning in 1946 or 1947, federal and state partners collaborated to map soils and vegetation in wildlands of California to assess suitability for livestock and timber harvesting and inform land management activities. This effort has been referred to as the Cooperative Soil-Vegetation Survey. This survey was an outgrowth of the Wieslander Vegetation Type Map (VTM) Survey, which began in the late 1920s and ended in the early 1940s. The Cooperative Soil-Vegetation Survey resulted in several map series, including the Soil-vegetation map (or Vegetation-soil map) series. Polygons of forest and associated species were drawn using a combination of aerial photo interpretation and fieldwork.
Each sheet with "Year of aerial photography" coverage diagram and index to adjoining sheets.
Each sheet individually numbered: Mendocino County 43 A-1,4 -- Mendocino and Trinity counties 43 B-1 -- Mendocino County 46 B-3 -- Lake and Mendocino counties 43 D-4 -- Mendocino and Sonoma counties 61 B-4 --Sonoma County 64 B-2.
In upper margin of most early sheets: "Species composition of vegetation. Series and depth class of soil. Site quality of timber croplands." Also on most early sheets, either "Grassland sampling locations" or "Soil-vegetation plot locations."
In upper margin of source maps issued in the late 1970s: "Soil series and phases. Cover percent, classes of woody vegetation. Species composition of dominant vegetation. Site quality of timber croplands. Soil-vegetation plot locations."
In upper margin of sheets with source map data from the 1950s: "U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, California Forest and Range Experiment Station, Division of Forest Economics-Forest Survey."
In upper margin of sheets with source map data from the 1970s: "Soil-Vegetation Survey. Cooperating agencies: Pacific Southwest Forest & Range Experiment Station, Forest Service, U.S. Dept. of Agriculture; Division of Agricultural Sciences, University of California; Division of Forestry, Dept. of Conservation, The Resources Agency, State of California."
Each sheet with detailed vegetation mapping source map data and compilation history note in lower left margin: "Compiled by M. Cameron, P. Haskey, R. Nelson, 1951. Field classification by K. Cuff, P. Zinke, 1949, 1950. First edition: October 1951. Revised edition: May 1952"--On sheet Mendocino County 43 A-1,4.
Each sheet with detailed base map data note in lower right margin: "Base map: U.S.F.S. Covelo quadrangle, 15' series, advance copy 1947. Land grid: State Division of Forestry, Map of Mendocino County, 1947. Mt. Diablo Meridian"--On sheet Mendocino County 43 A-1,4.
