Jim Cuno was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1951. He moved around as child because of his father’s career in the United States Air Force, and lived in Louisiana, Ohio, Florida, Washington, California, and Bermuda. He attended Air Force Academy Prep School after graduating from high school but withdrew and moved to London with his parents before beginning his college education at Willamette University. He did his graduate studies in art history at the University of Oregon and earned his PhD. from Harvard University. Cuno began his career as Assistant Curator of Prints at Harvard Art Museum and was an Assistant Professor at Vassar before moving into museum leadership roles. He served as the director of the Grunwald Center for Graphic Arts at the Hammer Museum, director of the Hood Museum of Art, the Elizabeth and John Moors Cabot Director of the Harvard Art Museums, director of The Courtauld Institute of Art, the Eloise W. Martin Director of the Art Institute of Chicago, and the President and Chief Executive Officer of the J. Paul Getty Trust, where he worked from 2011 until his retirement in July 2022.
