Description

"Based on the description of Olivia'' from Italo Calvino's Invisible Cities, this piece strives to illustrate the ways in which words can obscure our understanding of a space, a place, and even the world. Oftentimes, words fail to capture the dichotomies that characterize a space. Instead, words create more confusion--every new description, each new set of words, evokes a different image of a space. To truly understand a place, we often have to pull away the words entirely and see it for ourselves. But upon seeing a space firsthand, we too find ourselves incapable of describing it adequately with words." -- Book artist statement.
