Marion Epting is an artist who works primarily in printmaking. Epting was born in Forest,
Mississippi, in 1940, and mainly grew up in Los Angeles, California. He attended Los Angeles
City College (LACC), and then Otis Institute of Art, where he earned a BFA and MFA. His work
includes Ying Yang, Butterfly, and Alternative. Epting taught at California State University,
Chico from 1969-2007, becoming the first Black professor to achieve tenure at the university. In
this interview, Epting discusses his childhood, including family, early education, and community
in Los Angeles; early spiritual awakening; early exposure to art and music; arts education at
LACC and Otis, including professors such as Charles White, and work created; techniques of
printmaking; creative process, including reading about physics and philosophy; interest in the
perpetual alternation of opposites; university service work, students, and colleagues; marriages
and children; shows, including Life Model: Charles White and his Students and The Art of
Marion Epting; prints, including Petition, One Flew Over East and the Other Flew West, and
Ahura Mazda; gallery representation, including Brockman Gallery; and receiving the Turner
Prize for Excellence in the Arts.
