Diary of A.L. Baker during his time in Calif. during the gold rush as a miner and merchant, (Sept. 16, 1849 to June 1850.) He describes the conditions, prices of goods, politics, the Tuolumne Company's attempt at building a dam, Murphy's New Diggings, and the relations between different groups including Americans, Californians, Native Americans, Mexicans, Frenchmen and Bolivians. Also includes ledgers recording amount of gold collected on a particular day, costs for supplies and computations. Volume 2 consists of a typed transcription.
