Alberta Rincón is the former Director of Diversity at the UC Berkeley School of Public Health and the former Assistant Dean of Graduate Diversity at UC Berkeley. After graduating from California State University, Chico with a degree in community health education, Rincón worked as a vocational nurse in the East Bay for several years. She attained her master's degree in public health (MPH) at UC Berkeley's School of Public Health in 1986, and subsequently worked with the University Health Services before transitioning to work on diversity initiatives in the School of Public Health in 2005 and the wider UC Berkeley campus in 2015. Following her retirement in 2019, Rincón was rehired at UC Berkeley as the interim chief of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging. Additionally, she held a faculty position teaching community health work at City College of San Francisco until December of 2021. In this interview, Rincón discusses her family background, her careers at these institutions, her experience as a person of color in graduate education, her involvement with diversity initiatives at several institutions and levels.
