Granted (1) by Fages Oct. 20, 1784, and (2) by Borica Jan. 12, 1798, to Jose Maria Verdugo; about 8 leagues, by name. Claim filed by Julio and Catalina Verdugo Oct. 21, 1852. Confirmed by the Board Sept. 11, 1855. Appeal dismissed by the District Court June 4, 1857. Patent issued to Julio Verdugo and Catalina Verdugo Jan. 28, 1882, for 36,403.32 acres. The patent is recorded in Los Angeles. No. 423 General Land Office map. This grant was also called Zanja, and also Arroyo Hondo. This is one of the two known grants made in accordance with the decree of Aug. 12, 1768, providing for grants to soldiers marrying Indians. Bowman, J.N.
