Granted (1) by Figueroa Aug. 2, 1834, Real de Aguilas which he exchanged for Vergeles granted (2) by Castro Sept. 4, 1835, to Jose Joaquin Gomez; about 2 leagues, by name. Claim filed by James Stokes Apl. 7, 1852. Rejected by the Board Feb. 21, 1854. Confirmed by the District Court Sept. 28, 1855; appeal dismissed Feb. 24, 1857. Patent issued to James Stokes Apl. 3, 1875, for 8,759.12 acres. The patent is recorded in Salinas, Monterey County. No. 249 General Land Office map. In Monterey County 6,131.38 acres; in San Benito County 2,627.74 acres. When these three small cañadas were measured and the grantee placed in possession in 1840 the names were changed to Vergeles at the request of the grantee. The grant has also been called Borregas, and also Cañada de en medio y Cañada de Cabada. Bowman, J.N.
