Granted (1) by Antonio M. Pico, alcalde of San José, in the absence of any mining official authorized to make such a grant, Dec. 30, 1845, 3,000 varas radius around the mouth of the mine, and (2) by the President of Mexico May 23, 1846, 2 leagues, both grants to Andrés Castillero. Claim filed by Andrés Castillero Sept. 30, 1852. Confirmed by the Board Jan. 8, 1856, for the grant of 1845 including the mine. This decision confirmed by the District Court Jan. 18, 1861, but a lesser area around the mouth of the mine. The claim was rejected by the Supreme Court Mar. 10, 1863, by mandate, because the grant was not made in accordance with the granting procedure governing mines, and because the alcalde was without authority to make the grant. The mine was also called locally Chaboya's Mine. Bowman, J.N. Index of the Spanish-Mexican private land grant records and cases of California, I, 512 (shelved as BANC MSS C-R 17, Bancroft Library).
