Pictorial relief from the shrine of Wu Rong (d. 168) at the Wu Family Shrines, Jiaxiang, Shandong. Here, two sides of the cornerstone of a niche in the wall. On the right, four registers of relief depicting birds, winged beings, and zoomorphic cloud patterns; two mingjia 蓂莢 plants and supernatural beings; a woman being served food by several attendants; and a chariot and riders. On the left, four registers of relief depicting what seems to be a cross section of a multistoried building: on the roof, fantastic creatures; inside, servants in the kitchen preparing a meal; attendants on the upper floors serving the meal to a man and woman in separate apartments; and on the floor above them seated figures play and listen to music--all framed and compartmented by eaves, ceilings, floors, and columns.
