Description

This monochrome artotype from 1887 depicts two massive, multi-story Victorian mansions situated side-by-side on a hillside. The residence on the left features a series of tall, narrow towers with conical and pyramidal roofs, while the residence on the right is characterized by extensive bay windows, ornate masonry, and a flat roofline with decorative iron cresting. Both structures are highly detailed with intricate architectural trim, numerous chimneys, and multiple rows of windows. A dark, ornate fence runs along the bottom of the properties, bordering a steep paved street in the foreground. To the right of the homes, a vertical grayscale color calibration strip is visible. Faint text printed along the upper margin of the image reads, "Artotype No. 18. BANCROFT LIBRARY" and "With 'S. F. News Letter,' July 16th, 1887".
