Gladys Okada was born in Eleele on the island of Kauai, Hawaii. The daughter of Japanese immigrants, Okada grew up and attended school in the area of the McBryde Sugar Company plantation during World War II. In this interview, Okada discusses growing up on the McBryde sugar plantation, religion and schooling on the island of Kauai, the impact of Pearl Harbor and internment camps on education and the Japanese population of Eleele, moving to the mainland, and her eventual return to Kauai.
