Irvin Lowery was born in Columbus, Ohio and studied engineering at Ohio State University for two years before entering the Navy. He held a variety of jobs over the course of his career, including as a teacher, a beer wholesaler, an automobile dealer, and an employee at a newspaper. He was also a part of the National Urban League civil rights organization. In this interview, Lowery discusses his forced enlistment and experience in the Navy, social conditions for African Americans during and after the war, the Port Chicago explosion and its aftermath, work with the Urban League, and his thoughts on imported products and outsourcing labor.
