Description
Richard Teachout was born in Youngstown, Ohio in 1929 and later moved with his family to Warren, Ohio on account of his father’s transfer to the Sharon Steel plant in Warren. He enlisted in the army in 1946, after the end of World War II, and served in Alaska and Germany before reenlisting in the 1950s and serving again in Alaska during the Korean War. Upon returning to Warren, he took up work in the Sharon Steel mills under his superintendent father. In this interview, Teachout recalls growing up in a steel mill town during the Depression, the influence of the local mafia in Warren, mill work and its hazards, women in mill jobs, his memories of family members’ military service, and his own military career.
