Mamie Hutchins was born in 1922 in McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania to an Italian family. After high school, she and her sister opened up a restaurant, where she met her future husband. Having shut down the restaurant after the start of the war, Hutchins began working at American Bridge in Ambridge, where she remained until she married her husband and moved to Florida for his Navy career in 1944. In this interview, Hutchins discusses her childhood and growing up during the Depression, her job in Ambridge and workplace harassment, moving to Florida and later to Escondido, California, and reflections on her wartime work.
