Katie Burks was born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1925 and attended segregated schools throughout her childhood. After high school, she moved to Seattle, Washington and began working for Boeing as a mechanic until the end of the war. She returned to Boeing in the same role and remained there until her retirement. In this interview, Burks discusses growing up as an African American in Birmingham, working at Boeing as a black woman, the union, race relations, and life during and after the war.
