Description

Nancy Donnelly Praetzel, a graduate of UC Berkeley, worked as a United Airlines stewardess in the mid-1950s and has lived most of her life in Marin County, where she raised her four children. Praetzel (née Donnelly) was born on September 30, 1931, in Marin County, California. Praetzel's maternal grandparents came to the Bay Area, respectively, from Ireland and England. Both her maternal and paternal grandparents met in San Francisco and moved to Marin County after the 1906 earthquake. In the 1930s, Praetzel's British maternal grandfather, Ernest Clayton, began painting wildflowers he collected while hiking in Marin County, the original prints of which he donated to the San Francisco Public Library. Praetzel later resurrected these prints from the archive, hosted gallery showings, and now sells her grandfather's prints online. Upon completing grammar school and high school in Marin County, Praetzel attended UC Berkeley from 1949–1953, where she joined the sorority Delta Delta Delta and majored in social welfare. Upon graduation, Praetzel worked in Marin County for the Camp Fire Girls, the first nonsectarian, multicultural organization for girls in America. From 1955–1957, Praetzel worked as a United Airlines stewardess, including a stint traveling with the DC Press Corps during Dwight D. Eisenhower's 1956 reelection campaign. In 1957, Praetzel (then named Nancy Donnelly) married Robert Praetzel, a fellow UC Berkeley graduate whom she met on campus seven years earlier. They have been married over six decades and live in the same home where they raised their four children in Kentfield, Marin County. In this interview, Praetzel discusses all of the above topics with detail on her family's history in Marin County, including her own memories of the Great Depression, World War II, youth summer camps, and her experiences at UC Berkeley.
