Description

Keith Yamamoto has spent his entire professional career at UCSF, starting in 1973 as a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics and rising to full professor ten years later. It was in Biochemistry that he began his path-breaking research on gene regulation and cell signaling, work that he discusses in this oral history and more fully in an earlier oral history, Politics, Ethics and Transcription Regulation in the UCSF Biochemistry Department. The present oral history covers his chairmanship of the Department of Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology (1994–2003), responsibilities as Vice Dean for Research, School of Medicine (2002–2003 and 2015–2017), and rise to Vice Chancellor for Research (2011–2015). After these interviews concluded, he was appointed Vice Chancellor for Science Policy and Strategy, and Director for Precision Medicine (2015–), a period covered in a third oral history, The Sandler Foundation and the Program in Breakthrough Biomedical Research at UCSF. The salient topic in the oral history that follows is Yamamoto’s key role as chairman of the Mission Bay Planning Committee which oversaw the acquisition, planning, and faculty staffing of UCSF’s new campus. Other notable topics include his multiyear service on NIH and NAS committees on peer review, study section revision, and scientific integrity and misconduct. This is one of three oral histories of Yamamoto. This and the other two can be found in The Bancroft Library and online versions are available through the Oral History Center website.
