Jerry Ornelas was born and raised in Berkeley, California. He attended Oakland City College and UC Berkeley extension before becoming a police officer. He worked as an officer at Peralta College and joined the East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD) police department in 1973. He became an ID tech and then a detective. In this interview, Ornelas discusses his early life, education, career as a police officer with the EBRPD, major crimes and cases, a helicopter crash in 1974, a tailbone injury in 1976 that eventually led to his retirement in the early 1990s, and his post-retirement career as private investigator.
