Description
Noah Itta was the grandson of the Azorean whaleman Antone Bett, who settled in Barrow, on the North Slope of Alaska, in the late 19th century. I interviewed him and his wife, Mollie, during a visit to Barrow in 2005. Antone was one of a good number of Azorean and Cape Verdean whalemen who settled in Arctic Alaska at the time (see also the interview with Elsie Adams concerning her grandfather, Joseph Ferreira). As is noted in the text, Mr. Itta responded to my questions in his native Inyupiaq language, which was subsequently translated by his daughter. So these six and one-half pages of text represent almost forty-five minutes of conversation.
