Description

Domingos Fernandes was born on the island of Fogo in the Cabo Verde islands, at the time a Portuguese colony. We learn about his family background, including his father’s many years as an immigrant in the U.S. Also his mother’s role in the household and beyond. There is discussion of the history of the islands, and their independence in 1975. Domingos speaks of his education, military service in Angola and his emigration to the U.S., and employment and further education here, as well as his wife’s and family history. Other topics discussed are those of Cabo Verdean emigration to the U.S., the term “Cabo Verde,” and the islands as a growing tourism destination. Finally, he speaks of the growth of Cabo Verdean organizations in California.
