Barbara “Barb” Cox served on Freedom to Marry’s steering committee from its inception through its transition to a Board of Directors when it became an independent 501c3 organization. She is currently Vice Dean of Academic Affairs at California Western School of Law. Cox was born in Wisconsin in 1956, attended college at Michigan State University, and law school at the University of Wisconsin. In this interview, Cox provides an account of the effort to pass one of the first “domestic partnership” laws in the U.S., in Madison, Wisconsin. She discusses early legal strategies for recognizing same-sex relationships. As a founding member of Freedom to Marry’s steering committee, she discusses the organization’s governance structure as well as several of its key activities.
