Ellen Roberts was born in Coeur d’Alene, ID and raised in Portland, Oregon. Her family lived in Vanport, Oregon while her parents were working in the shipyards. There, both she and her brother attended daycare. She discusses her early life, memories of daycare and living in Vanport, the 1948 flood that wiped out the town, and the consequences of this disaster.
