Hiromi Dye grew up in Winters, California, where her family ran a 61-acre fruit orchard. In high school, she won a speech competition in Sacramento on the meaning of citizienship. Like many leaders in the Japanese American community, Hiromi's father was abruptly detained immediate after Pearl Harbor. She and her family had no contact with him throughout the war. Hiromi and her family were incarcerated in Poston, Arizona. With assistance from Quakers, she was able to transfer from incarceration to study biology / pre-med at Mt. Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts. She met her husband, a Mormon Caucasian, in Syracuse and they lived in Virginia before settling in Southern California, where they raised their family.
