David Wellman was a graduate student in the Department of Sociology and a representative to the Graduate Coordinating Council [GCC] of FSM. He had been active in the civil rights movement in the Bay Area and a leader of Friends of SNCC and served on the editorial board of The Movement newspaper. He describes the formation and activities of the GCC and the oratorical prowess of Mario Savio and Steve Weissman, chairman of the GCC. Wellman is particularly astute in assessing the ways in which FSM was part of the transformation of the social, intellectual and political life of the campus as well as the rise of the New Left. Wellman discusses his own political background as a red-diaper baby and the differences between the Old Left and the New Left, and his involvement in SDS after FSM. At the time of this interview he was a professor of sociology and a founder of the Community Studies Program at U.C. Santa Cruz.
