Description

Robert Tjian is Professor of Molecular and Cell Biology at Berkeley and President of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. His association with Dr. Koshland began as a student in the Koshland lab and grew through the decades as scientific colleague and friend to position with Dan as powerhouses on the Berkeley campus. “Tij”, as he is familiarly known, discusses his collaboration with Dan on the Health Sciences Initiative, describing their vision for the initiative and fundraising strategy. As chairman of the Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on Biology, of which Dan was the first chair, Tjian describes his quick trip to China to convince Mr. Li Ka-shing, a wealthy industrialist with no previous ties to Berkeley, to agree to a substantial donation for the building named after him.
