Barbara Epstein was a student at Radcliffe College. She received a phone call from a fellow SNCC [Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee] member at 6 a.m. the morning after the sit-in around the police car at Berkeley. By 9 a.m. she had helped organize a picket of Harvard's administration for the right to pass out leaflets supporting off-campus political action. By 1 p.m. President Nathan Pusey granted that right. In this interview Epstein discusses: the influence of FSM on political organizations at Harvard;gender discrimination at Harvard and in SDS [Students for a Democratic Society];her left political background and membership in the Communist Party;feminism and the CP;graduate studies at UC Berkeley. Epstein is a professor in the History of Consciousness Department at UC Santa Cruz.
