Description

Richard Cándida Smith was a first year freshman living in an off campus mens residential hotel. He discusses the social mores governing men and women, volunteering to help set up the sound system for rallies, and his understanding of the liberal character of the movement compared to more radical activism on the University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor. The interview is particularly enlightening about the high caliber of intellectual discussions among fellow students and the leadership of FSM, about the masculine quest for perfection as it played out in the FSM and about his own insight on the left and art and politics that is recounted in his book Utopia and Dissent, 1958-1965. Cándida Smith was director of ROHO from 2001-2012.
