Steven Oliver was a member of the SFMOMA Board of Trustees (1989-2010), President of the Board (1995-1997) and Chair of the Board (2004-2007). Oliver originally started on the board of the California College of Arts and Crafts in 1980 at the request of his late friend John Perkins. After resigning from the Oakland Museum Board he was offered a position on the SFMOMA Board by Frances Bowes in 1989. During his time on the Board, Oliver was involved with the creation of the parking garage and Mark Jensen’s roof garden, and building up the museum's collection. In this interview, Oliver discusses his arrival to SFMOMA, time on various medical boards, the Oakland Museum Board, first art commission, interest in art, commissioning art for UCSF campus, founding the American Alliance for the Arts Political Action Committee, philanthropy, Neal Benezra, and expanding Latin American and Asian acquisitions at the museum.
